Born in Mexico City, David Fernandez began his training at the Centro de Arte y Ballet. In 1989, after winning a scholarship to Giordano Jazz Dance in Chicago, he immigrated to the United States. David performed with the company, receiving the Jeffrey Mildenstein Award. While studying at the Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theatre, he began choreographing, creating contemporary works for performance in art galleries and alternative spaces.

In January 2012, his documentary about the making of White Shirt, Black Tie, Black pants XXS will be premiered at the Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center. The film gives a behind the scenes glimpse of 16 young dancers from schools such as the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Joffrey Ballet School, Scarsdale Ballet Studio, and Westport’s Academy of Dance, rehearsing and filming the adapted choreography.

In February 2012, Some Dance Company: A David Fernandez Celebration, organized by New York City based dancer and arts manager Kimberly Giannelli, will be held to honor the renowned master teacher, dancer and choreographer for his contributions to the international dance community. Excerpts from an array of David’s most admired works will be performed by leading dancers from New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, the New Jersey Ballet, and others all donating their talents and services for this very special performance.

In December 2011, David participated in the Youth America Grand Prix’s Making of a Choreographer with choreography performed by New York City Ballet principal dancer Gonzalo Garcia, American Ballet Theatre dancers Luciana Paris and Nicole Graniero. In 2010, David was commissioned to create a new ballet for Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, which premiered in 2011. The New Jersey Ballet Company premiered his ballet “The Raven” in October 2010.

In November 2010, The Vassar Repertoire Dance Theatre, directed By John Meehan, premiered a special version of David's "White Shirt, Black Tie, and Black Pants", which is set to the music of J.S. Bach.

In January 2009, two of his works premiered at Lincoln Center’s “Dance on Camera” Festival - Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear starring New York City Ballet Principal Daniel Ulbricht, and Icarus APR, a Contemporary choreography created for New York City Ballet Soloist Ask La Cour. Objects in Mirror was then selected to be a part of Ballet Builders 2010.

In 2008, David was commissioned by Sergei Danilian to create a solo for New York City Ballet Principal Joaquin de Luz for the celebrated Kings of the Dance. The solo, Five Variations on a Theme, premiered at the National Opera House, Kiev, Ukraine, in November 2008, and continued to be presented throughout the Kings of the Dance 2009-10 worldwide tour. The piece has been performed on tour in Europe and in the USA at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and New York’s City Center, as well as at the Youth America Grand Prix 2010 Gala “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow.”

During his dance career, David performed with Chicago’s Boitsov Classical Ballet, dancing roles in Le Corsair, Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Specter de la Rose, and Pinocchio. He danced with the Lyric Opera of Chicago for several years, performing in Aida, Faust, Ghost of Versailles, and as a soloist in Un Re in Ascolto. David was a guest artist with the Ballet Theatre of Chicago and in Indiana University’s production of Don Quixote, directed by Susan Jones of the American Ballet Theatre. A highlight of David's later career was performing alongside Mikhail Baryshnikov in the play The Doctor and The Patient at the 2004 Lincoln Center Festival. David is currently on the faculty of the Joffrey Ballet School and Scarsdale Ballet Studio in New York, and Westport Academy in Connecticut. He also teaches several Ballet and Contemporary Summer programs in the US and Mexico.
