Dalva de Oliveira (1917-1972) was a very popular and artistically influential singer of the brazilian radio days. A beautiful mulata with green-blue eyes and a nice soprano voice, she started to sing with her father, received education (sung in operettas) and later, for her career in popular music, received advice by Villa --Lobos, the composer who armoured the brazilian music. Marchinhas, choros, samba, samba-canção baião, bolero, tango composed her repertory. Her life was a popular issue and novel. Press and people used to call her the brazilian nightgale, the queen of the voice or the queen of the radio. In 1957 she recorded in Argentina a record with tangos in brazilian lyrics. Francisco Canaro and his flamboyant orquestra tipica (legends of the genre) accompany her. In this record we find ´´lencinho querido`` (cherished handkerdhief). A tango composed by Juan de Dios Filiberto in 1917. It was instrumental according to the habits but in 1920 Gabino Coria Peñaloza added the lyrics (insipid in my opinion). The same guys gave us Caminito. At that time El pañuelito (handkerchief in spanish) was quite popular. Though, it vanished from the repertory but it found another time of glory with the voice of Dalva who brings it to us today. The brazilian lyrics were invented by Maugeri Neto and have more punch than the argentinian. By the way, the first tango in south America was composed in Brazil in 1871. Argentinian friends remain calm: it used a rythme very close to the habanera. The astonishing vocalise part in the lencinho querido tango (it must be a weird surprise for the argentinians) gives Dalva the oportunity to show of her voice and to respond to the peruvian singer´s Yma Sumac excesses ! The fotos illustrating the video were taken at the historic Confeitaria Colombo. A famous art nouveau café-restaurant in Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1894. It is still functionning in the same adress, open to all kind of public who follow the habits of Villa-Lobos, president Getulio Vargas or writer Rui Barbosa.
